A sudden loss of power is stressful, especially when the South Florida heat makes maintaining air conditioning critical. When the lights go dark, the immediate assumption is often a municipal grid failure. However, a significant percentage of power failures are isolated to a single property and require immediate, technical intervention.

1. The Total Outage Protocol
If your entire home loses power instantaneously, follow this diagnostic path before calling an electrician:
- Check the Neighborhood: Look outside. Are the streetlights out? Are your neighbors’ homes dark? If yes, this is a municipal blackout. Report the outage to FPL and wait for grid restoration.
- Check the Main Breaker: If your neighbors have power, the issue is isolated to your property. Locate your primary electrical panel and inspect the large Main Breaker. If it is in the middle “tripped” position, firmly push it entirely to the “OFF” side, and then snap it back to the “ON” position.
- Check the Meter Box: If your panel is outside, do not touch it if it is raining or standing water is present.
If resetting the Main Breaker fails to restore power, or if it immediately violently trips again, you have a dead short in your system. Do not attempt to repeatedly reset a tripping main breaker. This can cause severe internal panel damage or fire.
2. The “Half-Power” Partial Outage
One of the most concerning—and mechanically complex—emergencies occurs when half your home goes dark, or when some lights dim dramatically while others shine unusually bright.
Losing a Phase (Leg)
Your home is fed by a 240V split-phase system consisting of two 120V “legs.” If one of these legs fails (either at the utility transformer or within your underground wiring), roughly half the circuits in your panel will lose power. Notably, massive 240V appliances (like your central AC or dryer) will fail to operate, and might emit a strange humming sound as they desperately try to pull power from a dead line.
Action: Turn off the 2-pole breakers for your AC and appliances immediately to prevent motor burnout, and call for emergency response.
The “Lost Neutral” Hazard
If your lights are wildly fluctuating—dimming when the microwave runs, and getting intensely bright when the AC stops—you are likely experiencing a Lost Neutral connection. This is an extreme fire hazard. A disconnected neutral wire causes uncontrolled voltage swings across your electrical phases, sending 160+ volts into delicate 120V electronics, physically frying microprocessors and melting appliance cords.

3. Sensory Warnings: Smells and Sounds
Your electrical system should be entirely silent and odorless. The emergence of sensory warnings dictates an immediate emergency response:
- The Buzzing/Sizzling Panel: Breakers typically “snap” when they trip. If a breaker buzzes loudly, it indicates that it has failed to trip during an overload, and electricity is “arcing” (jumping through the air) across loose metal contacts.
